Grandma's Rocking Chair - September 29, 2013 - Grid Paper Review

Product Review - Grid paper
Grid Paper
Stampin' Up sells Grid Paper.  I use it at my classes and for other things.  I use to use just scrap paper or packing paper, as it was free or at least it came in packages, and I didn't know what to do with it and I never throw anything away. Now that Stampin' Up! has gone bubble packaging I don't have a lot of that and I have other uses for what I do have.  For the past year or two I have been using the Grid paper and I love it and so do my stampers.

For one thing I don't have to supply rulers, each piece of grid paper has a built in ruler, on all sides.  Great for designing, you can tell what size will go well with the card.  I have a card base and one layer but I want to do either another layer or a die cut which one will fit best.  For classes I cut all the pieces but some are the same colors and they need to know what each size is so they don't use the wrong size, they can measure them right there.

Another thing,  it is great for writing down notes, either on sizing or supplies you want, all they do then is take the paper home. You can sketch on it if you would like to try something different next time.

You can use it when you need to stamp off your stamp.  Try different ink colors to see what is best with which colors.  Keeps from using a lot of cardstock, when you are not sure of the color combo you want to use.  Also keeps your table free from stray ink.

I don't like throwing it away even when it is all inky.  I use it to make my Quilt cards.

Doesn't matter if it is inky I can lay out my design on the grid paper.  I use the Multipurpose adhesive and then lay out my design on the grid paper.  I can get at least 4 and most of the time 6 cards out of one sheet. and then it lines up perfectly.

I really like the Grid paper and it is only $10.95 for a hundred sheets. If you would like to order it just click here Don't forget to use the hostess code of YSDMHAFX until September 30.

There's A Card Thursday - Sept 26, 2013 - Using September Paper Pumpkin

Sorry I am late but I thought I had a video, but really didn't and had to go to college night last night and today I had to wait until Meigan came home to be my camera person. I know excuses, excuses.
But I did get a video done between the classes I had today. I used the September Paper Pumpkin for a different card. here is what the original card looks like.

I think the base card looks like a target, Meigan thinks it looks like a spider web.  Well I one this time, maybe my next card will be a Halloween card.

Here is the card I made for the video.
I really like the kit and would love to have card stock like this.

Well hope you enjoy the video.

Fall Banner Kit

Well this morning it sure felt like fall.  I have been busy preparing for my 3 D Hershey Class for today so not much time to do much of anything else.  I am even late getting There's A Card Thursday up, doesn't help that Meigan has homework now and can't always be my camera person. But for the last few days I have been working on a cool banner.

The tough thing was trying to decide what to put on the rosettes.  Here is the banner.
Right now I am living in Wyoming and they say that they have beautiful falls here but it is just yellows.  I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I loved the fall.  So many colors, Reds, Oranges, Greens, Yellows.  Just so colorful.  There was one drive that we called the rainbow tunnel.  The trees went across the road and formed like a tunnel and in the fall it was great as there were so many colors was like driving through a rainbow.  So I like the colors.
These banners are so easy to do.

Using Build a Banner Simply Created Kit makes it so easy. Item number 133507 Click the item number to order

I also used the Designer Rosette Big Shot Die item number 125594
Designer Rosette Bigz Xl Die

I made these great Rosettes with the die.

End of Summer Facebook Page Hop

It is the end of summer already.  I can't believe that it is already over, didn't it just start last week. I know the older I get the faster the summer seems to go.

This is a good time to celebrate the end of summer and what a better way than a hop.  So over on my facebook page I am participating in the Social Marketing for Crafters Facebook Hop ( #SMCrafters ). Where you go from Facebook Page to Facebook page.  We are offering prizes and giveaways and a lot of neat crafting.  You can head over to my page ) https://www.facebook.com/MaryTrautnerStampinUp ) to start off the hop.  Like or comment on my facebook post and you will be entered into my drawing for the Tags 4 You Set from the Stampin' Up!Holiday Catalog.

The hop goes from 12 AM September 24 to 11:59 PM September 26.  During that time I will also be doing some special projects here on my blog.

The first project is a Fall wreath. I took this idea from the Stampin' Up! Annual Catalog, page 185.

I started out with one of those foam circles and using the Autumn Accents Bigz Die (127812 ) Sweater Weather Designer Series Paper (132184) and various colors of cardstock I started layering leaves on the circle.  I attached the leaves using a hot glue gun.  I kept attaching them for about 4 -5 layers.

To finish it off I used the Designer Type Photopolymer Stamp Set (132956), Elegant Eggplant Classic Ink Pad (126969 ), Elegant Eggplant Cardstock (105126, Naturals Ivory Cardstock (101849 ), Petite Pennants Builder Punch (122361) and Linen Thread (104199) to make the banner.  This would make a great door wreath, or move the banner down and put a pillar candle in the middle for a super centerpiece.

I hope you like this project.  If you are visiting from the Facebook Page hop, I hope you come back and visit again.

Grandma's Rocking Chair - September 22, 2013 - Back to Basics

Grandma's Rocking Chair Question - How do I stamp?

Today at my class I had a couple of new stampers.  I love new stampers they are so excited when we do something.  We embossed a card and I heard the WOW look at that. We used the Big Shot, with thinlits and embossing folders and they couldn't believe it.  They used the Simply Score Tool to make a score to fold their cards and they were isn't that great a straight line. So I love new stampers.  I also love new stampers because it gets me back to the basics of stamping. Not just what size is a card, how do you make the card base,  how do you open a stamp pad, how do you clean the stamp and what I want to touch on today how to stamp.

Yes there are a lot basics to go over but today I want to touch on one that even made me want to stop stamping, and for a fact I didn't even want to try again because I could never get it to look right. My friend Dee, helped me learn the simple thing of how do I stamp.

Now there are a lot of reasons why something happens to make your stamping look bad.  It could be a really inky stamp pad, a dry stamp pad,an uneven stamping surface, a misaligned stamp.

For new stampers I do a few things at first.  One is I have them stamp a few images on scraps.  A lot of times there is no problems and they stamp just fine.  Though I do find a few main problems one is a pressure problem and the other is a moving, rolling problem.  I then explain to them that to stamp a clear crisp stamp there are a few things they should do to stamp.  One is to ink a stamp turn it over and look at it making sure that it is inked all over and not globed or over inked with ink on places it should not be. Second thing I tell them is to stamp straight down, don't rock and roll and don't push it through the paper but to keep the pressure even and firm. Then when they remove the stamp to bring it straight up. Then I have them practice again.

Here are a few stamping flubs.
The above can be caused by a dry pad but these were caused by other things  I made these to show what stamping mistakes you can do and then how to correct it.  These mistakes are mainly a pressure problem.
The Top Left was uneven pressure - this is really common on large stamps since it is really hard to put even pressure on all the stamp at once.  Some folks can not put a firm pressure on the whole stamp so I tell them for large stamps they can do a few things.
1) They can butt stamp. Put your paper down on the table then your stamp on top and then sit on the stamp.  This will provide firm even pressure.  If you can't get on top of the table try stamping on a chair.
2) Put the stamp rubber side up on the table then put your cardstock on it and if your cardstock does not cover your stamp a piece of scrap paper on top of your cardstock.  Then take your Brayer and rub it over you cardstock and stamp, making sure that you run over all the stamp.  Be careful of moving the paper especially when you run off the side of the stamp.

The Bottom is not enough pressure.  A lot of times this happens when you have applied to much pressure at first and get the halo affect (see Below) and you don't want to do it again, so you hardly press at all.  Just do it again and put a little more pressure on it. Practice is great just grab some scraps and practice.

The Top Right is a pretty good stamped image.

Now these I call my Rock and Roll problems.

The Top one is not a rock and roll, but could be.  It is one that is to much pressure and gives it a halo. A lot of this is caused by having to much ink on the stamp but even if you get ink on the rubber and not just the raised stamp you can still stamp it with out the halo.  You can also see that the letters are fatter and blurred.  I tell my folks to go with less pressure still firm but just don't try to stamp the floor and just the cardstock.

The Second one is a type of rock and roll.  This one I did by trying to see where I was going to stamp and started by putting the top of the stamp down first then rolling it up straight, then lifting it off.  It is very common when you want to make sure you are stamping in the exact spot you want it.  Very common when you punch first then stamp.  What I tell my folks who do this is:
1) If you have to have it exactly where you think it should be, use a Stamp-A-Ma-Jig.  Though I also tell them I never knew anyone who got a card to say Geez you didn't get it straight or right where it belongs. So they really don't have to worry about it.
2) Try stamping first and then punching out.  Turn your punch upside down and you can line it up to punch it perfectly.

The Third one is a good stamped image.  It had the same amount of ink on the rubber as the other so you can get a good image even if you have ink on your rubber.

The Bottom one is the real rock and roll.  It is caused by going straight down with the stamp and then rolling it back and forth to make sure that it is stamped correctly and fully.  It is a very common mistake and if you have some cheap stamps you may have to do this to get good coverage since at times the cheaper stamps are not all the height.  I think this is what caused me to stop stamping before I got some help. I hated that halo effect and could not get rid of it. What I tell my folks is that if they put it straight down make a firm pressure don't rock it, put it down and take it up straight up and down.  Some of my folks have a problem keeping the little stamps steady so I tell them to use two hands on the stamps and that really helps.  This is mainly a practice problem, so practice makes perfect for this one.  It is also a confidence problem not thinking it will stamp clearly, so again practice makes perfect.

I hope you have enjoyed this Grandma's Rocking Chair.  If you have any questions I can answer, or any reviews you would like me to do, you can leave a comment or send me an e-mail at marysstamping at gmail.com

Colorful Saturday Challenge September 21

Good Morning,
Such a great Saturday.  This is the first day of fall.  I always love fall but I really don't like the winter that follows. I have been listening to a series of good mystery books by Val McDermid. I love to listen to books when I make cards, but at times I just stop and have to listen and this series is one of those. So been having a slow card making these last few weeks.

Every Saturday I will choose a Color Combo from either the Annual Catalog or the current mini catalog.  I will make two cards or projects using that color combination. I then challenge you to make at least one card or project using that color combo and post a link in the comments section to either your blog post on the challenge or your pinterest photo.
Thanks for playing.

So let’s see what this week’s colors are?

For Colorful Saturday the colors are Bermuda Bay and Pear Pizzazz.

I have two projects today, both cards. I liked this combination of course one of my favorite colors is Bermuda Bay.
This first one uses Birthday Basic Designer Series paper and Yippee-Skippee! Stamp Set.  Simple and quick card.

Grandma's Rocking Chair - September 15, 2013 - Another Thank You Photopolymer Stamp Set

Grandma's Rocking Chair Review - Another Thank You Photopolymer Stamp Set (133454, $13.95).

As most of my regulars know I have two favorite go to stamp sets - Lovely As A Tree and Teeny Tiny Wishes, I use other sets but these are the sets in a pinch I pull out. Well I now have to add another one.  I like the photopolymer stamps from Stampin' Up!.  I like how they stamp, how they feel and some of the sets that have come out so far. I don't sell a lot mainly because I believe they are not in the catalog and they are hard to find.  I have showed them a few times but they really aren't a go to set for my classes.  Well that is going to change.  I always need Thank You cards and a lot of my classes especially the technique classes we make Thank You Cards. I got the Another Thank you set a few weeks ago and really haven't played with it much.  But I needed to do a quick and easy thank You card so I grabbed it the other day and decided that the big thank you would be easy no embellishments just a quick card.

I have fallen in love with it.  Yes you will be seeing a lot more of this set.  I have now set it out on my work table and you will be seeing more of it.  If you don't have it, you really should get it, if you make Thank You Cards.  Big to small thank yous and I just love how they look, so many different styles.

Another Thank You Photopolymer Stamp Set

So using the Big Thank You I am creating packs of Cards to sell at the craft fairs this year. Here is another one just different colors.

I will have a Video out on this one shortly since it is a Quick and Easy Card.  If you want a Set that is Versatile this will be one of them.  I know that it is only Thank You's but you really need it.
