Grandma's Rocking Chair - July 19, 2015 - Punches vs Framelits/Thinlits

Punches vs Framelits/Thinlits

Lets discuss these and some of the uses.

I have an addiction to punches and have almost everyone that Stampin' Up! has sold since I became a Demonstrator, which is a lot.  I have to admit I also have other ones.  Especially the big ones so I could do more layering with circles and squares.  I like to layer.

Here is what punches look like.  They are great since I can fit them in a draw they stack on top of each other.    Punches can come in different shapes and we even have punches that make things such as the Owl and Bird Builder, plus the new Tree Builder.

If you get different size punches you can layer.  We have 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/4", 1 3/8", 1 ½”, 1 3/4", 2”  and 2 1/2" circle punches and they can all be layered on to one another.

Framelits/thinlits are a cutting platform that can be used in the Big Shot or other die cutting machine.  They make frames.  You can use more than one at a time to make a frame.  Such as the above Deco Labels Framelits you could put the large one and the next size one on the nestled together and run through the Big Shot and you would then have a frame - the middle cut out.  You can also use them like a punch to cut out stamped images.
Framelits  cut out specific images, either alone or with matching stamps.

Can you tell what theses cut out?
Framelits are easier to store, or for me I can get more in the space I have.  I store them in the Clear Mounted Stamp Cases with on a piece of flat magnetic sheet.    I love them but they were a pain to use if you wanted to cut out sayings or stamped images, just a pain. They would move all the time, I was forced to hold them down with sticky strip or post it notes.  But now we are selling the Magnetic Platform.

If you have the Big Shot and want to use Framelits, or Edgelits, you have to have the magnetic platform. Just Click Here to order yours, you will really love it.

The only draw back of the framelits is that if you go to a crop or want to go on vacation and take it with you, you have to have the big shot and that is pretty large to take with you.

I like both the punches and the framelits and I use them a lot.

  1. Hi Mary,

Thanks for the great article and your personal thoughts on 'Punches v Framelits', I appreciate someone from over-the-pond starting the conversation!

I love the big punches for layering and using as photo mounts and the builder ones that you can actually create a whole 'something' with. BUT - they are heavy and expensive! I wish they would do a Snowman or Santa one - are you are listenin' Stampin' up!? ;)

I reckon that you get more value for money with the Framelits, especially since the magnetic platform has become available. Yes, it was really frustrating keeping them under control and getting them to do as they were asked - told even - eventually! Do you talk to your machines 'n' stuff?

The Big Shot, cutting plate and those two clear thingies are expensive initially, for sure, but I would NEVER be without my pink and black (with added bling) beauty! Save up and get it in a sale with added extras would be my advice/tip. :)

    1. Thanks Christine,

Yes I do talk to me tools. I even name some. I think the best way to get the Big Shot at least in the US is join Stampin' Up! it is the same price $99 no shipping costs and then you can also get and extra $25 worth of Big Shot products.

I love my Big Shots - yes I have two one for embossing and one for cutting they are always set up for each type so I don't have to hunt for things.

      Thanks for the comments.
      Mary
