Colorful Saturday Card Making, Project Challenge

I would like to start a Saturday Color Challenge.
Every Saturday I will choose a Color Combo from either the Annual Catalog or the current mini catalog.  I will make two cards or projects using that color combination. I then challenge you to make at least one card or project using that color combo and post a link in the comments section to either your blog post on the challenge or your pinterest photo.  A random winner will be chosen each Friday and announced on the next Saturday Challenge.  The winner will receive a goodie bag or a set of note cards.

So Lets Start:

This weeks Color Challenge is.
I love the the brightness of the colors.  I didn't use Bermuda Bay much when it was an in-color but now I love it.

Well here are my two cards.  I needed to do a sympathy card and didn't want to do the neutral colors as I really wanted to celebrate my friends life and not his death so this is the card I made for it.

Supplies: Stamps - Simply Sketched (Hostess Set clear mount - 129672); Ink - Bermuda Bay (131171, $5.95); Cardstock - Raspberry Ripple 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 and scrap (126842, $6.95), Bermuda Bay 2 pieces, 1 1/2 x 4 3/4 (131197, $6.95), Gumball Green 1 1/2 x 4 3/4 (126840, $6.95), Whisper White Scrap (100730, $8.50); Accessories - Stampin' Dimensionals (104430, $3.95), Glue Dots (103683, $4.95), Paper Snips (103579, $9.95), Scallop Oval Punch (119856, $16.95), Large Oval Punch (119855, $15.95).

Second Card is a Birthday Card I did for a dear friend. He is a happy vibrant person and I wanted to give it a lot of color and it had to be a man card.

Supplies: Stamps - Sketched Birthday (clear 130426, $17.95); Ink Gumball Green (126861, $5.95), Raspberry Ripple (126859, $5.95); Cardstock - Bermuda Bay 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 (131197, $6.95), Raspberry Ripple 4 1/4 x 3 3/4 (126842, $6.95),  Gumball Green Scraps (126840, $6.95); Accessories - Stampin' Dimensionals (104430, $3.95), Glue Dots (103683, $4.95), Bitty Banner Framelits (129267, $14.95), Chevron Embossing Folder (127749, $7.95), Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder (117335, $7.95).

Grandma's Rocking Chair - June 23 Talking about Layers

Today's Question for Grandma's Rocking Chair: How many layers should you use on a card?

That is personal preference.  No layer simple cards are great and sometimes I find them harder to make than layered cards.  Here is a nice no layer card

You can also have a lot of layers on a card depends upon what you are layering and how big they are. This card has 5 layers on the flower.

If you use full card front layers and just cut them down a little you have to be careful of the weight if you are mailing them as they sometimes will get over an ounce.  You don't want your card sent back for more postage.

I usually like using two layers.

Though I find myself doing a lot of single layer cards also.

But sometimes I really go over board.
How many layers are on this card?
Layers don't have to be like mats, you can also layer your greetings.

They also don't even have to be the same type or size layers.

Just go ahead and try some layering.  If you are shy try using some Designer Series Paper as a first layer and just put a greeting and embellishments on it.  Oh but then you have to decide which side to have up.

If you have a stamping or  paper crafting question please leave a comment or e-mail me at nuhddad @ gmail.com (remove the spaces around the @)

Also don't forget the Mystery Hostess for this month.
Just use the Hostess Code B7NTCNZD and you will be entered into the drawing.
Mystery Host code  B7NTCNZD is good till June 30th and the winner will be announce July 1. The winner will choose Stampin'Up! product of their choice. To be entered in the drawing you need to enter the code.  The big question where do you enter the code when you are on the page of your shopping bag on the left bottom side you will see at the bottom where it say "Special Offer" the box that say "Do you have a hostess code"  Look like this

Grandma's Rocking Chair June 16 2023

Today's question: what is a good card size?

Most cards in the US are 4 1/4 by 5 1/2 or 5 1/2 by 4 1/4. You can make two cards by cutting a standard sheet of card stock in half making 2- 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 card bases and then folding them in half to make two cards.  Or even cut at 4 1/4 by 11 which gives you a tent card of 5 1/2 by 4 1/4.  These sizes use a standard A2 envelope a very common size envelope.

Another popular size card which I make a lot is a 3 x 3 card. They are to small to send through the mail but make a great card to attach to a gift or a small thank you card to give someone. You can make 8 out of a 12 x 12 sheet of cardstock. Envelope is a square 3 1/8 envelope.  Now that I have the simply score I make all of my own envelopes fast easy and they match nicely.

Thanks for the question. If you have a stamping or paper craft question just post it in the comments or e-mail me at nuhddad @ gmail.com (remove the space around the @).

Grandma's Rocking Chair for June 9, 2013

Question of the day for Grandma's Rocking Chair.
What is the Difference between wet and dry embossing?

Boy I guess I could talk forever about embossing be dry or wet.

When I first started to stamp dry embossing was way different than it is now. We had a light table, or window and tape, embossing stylus, embossing template and tons of patience (I never got to far on the patience so I didn't dry emboss a lot).  It was hard I didn't think it worked well so I had a lot of templates two light tables and only a few times did Dry embossing.

Here is the definition: Dry embossing, also called relief embossing, is done by tracing a stencil with a special tool, called a stylus. The result is a stunning, raised pattern on the object you are embossing.

Well all that has changed and now I can't think of sending a card out that it not embossed. What has changed that.  Well the Cuttlebug came out for me and the embossing folders and I was hooked.  Things just popped off the card. I know have the Big Shot that embosses but also die cuts, which I love.
Just put your card stock in the embossing folder and run it through the Big Shot, it is stunning.
Here are a few examples of dry embossing.

They now have so many patterns and styles that you can have different cards all the time.  Mix with that some great techniques using dry embossing and that makes great looking cards.

So what is wet embossing?  Well that is something before the Cuttlebug and Big Shot I did a lot and still love to do.  It is a great technique to do for new stampers and have the WOW look on their face when you heat the embossing powder and it embosses.

Definition is: "Wet" embossing is achieved by stamping with a particular type of ink, to which an embossing powder will adhere, then heating the powder to melt it into a raised finish.

Here are a few examples:

So how do you do it.  As I tell my folks it is magic and you can't get anymore fun than magic.

You need the following:
Slow Drying ink such as a pigment ink, or versamark - which is probably the most popular ink for embossing.
You need embossing powder, it comes in a wide variety of colors, but you really only need maybe clear, black and white.  With clear powder, versamark and Stampin' Up! Classic ink you can have any color Stampin' Up! has for embossing. I embossing powder melts so it is a type of plastic grains, really small.  They have fine powder and then they have an Ultra Thick Powder, mainly for general embossing you use the fine.
You need a heat tool or commonly called a heat gun. I tried it with a hair dryer and it was not hot enough and had to strong of a blowing power, just blew off all the powder before it melted.
If you are using Black embossing powder or a dark color or embossing on a dark card stock you may want an embossing buddy that removes the static from the card stock so the powder only stick where you want it to.
General steps.
1. Ink up your stamp with Versamark or a Pigment ink.
2. You may want to run the embossing buddy over your card stock now.
3. Stamp your card stock
4. Pour embossing powder over your stamped image.  There are some tips about doing this so you don't get it all over.  You may want ot watch one of my embossing videos to get them  here is one http://marysstampinghappenings.blogspot.com/2013/02/tips-techniques-tuesday-2-26-13.html
5. Tap off excess embossing powder
6.  Heat with the Heat gun and watch it change like magic.

There are a lot of great techniques using wet embossing and are mainly referred to as embossing techniques.  I have a few that you might want to check out on my techniques page.

Hope this answered your question.

I will be gone for a few weeks but I hope to be able to post a Grandma's Rocking Chair question on the Sunday's that I am away.  If I miss one I am sorry but will get back to it when we get home.

If you have any stamping questions you would like answered please leave a comment or e-mail me at nuhddad @ gmail.com (remove the space around the @).

Stampin' Up!s Seasonal Celebration Catalog coming soon

Good afternoon,
Today I am trying to catch up on a few things and also getting ahead before we go on vacation next week.
We are camping for 2 weeks in Michigan and really looking forward to it.  Or at least somewhat.  We are leaving our oldest daughter home since she has to work.  I don't know about that.  We may have to get a bulldozer in just to get back in when we get home. It will be a teenagers dream two weeks by herself (I hope).

Besides packing the trailer and washing sleeping bags and trying to get all the videos done before I go, I was trying to get the order in for the Seasonal Celebration Mini Catalog. If you would like me to send a catalog to you please send me your mailing address by June 25 you can e-mail it to me at nuhddad @ gmail.com (remove the spaces).  I can't wait to see it even if I have just started buying from the new catalog, I really need some holiday sets.

Back to packing

Grandma's Rocking Chair - June 2 2013

Question for today:

There is a lot of Dazzling in the Stampin' Up! Catalog what is the difference between the Dazzling Details, Dazzling Details - Dazzling Details (color) and the Dazzling Diamonds.
Dazzling Details - What a lot of folks call Glitter Glue It is a clear glue or a white glue that dries clear with glitter mixed in.  Our Dazzling Details contains: Silver Sparkle -  Silver Glitter; Cherry Cobbler - which is a Red Glitter;  and then the other Dazzling Details which is a clear type of Glitter.

Why they Called the Set Dazzling Details and one of the colors Dazzling Details I don't know, I think they should have called it Diamond Details, but they don't ask me so oh well.

The Dazzling Details and all Glitter Glue is great to use to add some sparkle to your card. It gives it dimension and can be applied directly not having to use glue to stick on.  I has a fine point so you can really get it where you want it. One problem is it does take a long time to dry, so if you want to do a quick card and send at the same time this is not something you would want to use.  I love it especially if I want to add just a few little dots or a small amount to give it a quick sparkle.  I would keep a pin handy if you don't use it every day as the tip clogs up and you need to open it up.

Dazzling Diamonds is a glitter not in glue and can be used for a lot of things, including making your own glitter glue.  You need an adhesive so that it sticks but you can use it with snail (makes a great straight line), use it with Heat & Stick Powder, Crystal Effects ( I used to make my own glitter glue with this), Glue Dots for just a little spot, 2-way glue pen, Multipurpose Liquid Glue and Multipurpose Adhesive sheets.  Dazzling Diamonds is a fine  glitter and almost clear so it just shines I love using it.  I have even mixed it with embossing powder to give a sparkling embossed look.
You can dye Dazzling Diamonds to coordinate with any Stampin’ Up! color. Here’s how:
1. Add one drop of Classic Stampin’ Ink Refill and a few drops of water to an empty Stack & Store container.
2. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of Dazzling Diamonds and mix. Continue adding glitter until all the dye is absorbed. The glitter will become fluffy as it absorbs the dye.

3. Continue to mix glitter until it sparkles. The dyed glitter will stay fluffy but the color will reflect off the glitter, so all you see is colored sparkles

Thanks for stopping by if you have any questions please leave them in a comment or e-mail them to me at nuhddad @ gmail.com (remove the spaces)
